In retrospect, it’s no surprise that someone should think of teaming Harley Quinn and Elvira in a crossover comic. The surprise is that nobody thought to do this long before now. Thankfully, Dynamite Entertainment and DC Comics finally made it happen in Harley Quinn X Elvira.

Harley Quinn X Elvira opens with The Clown Queen of Crime in an uncharacteristic rut. Halloween is her favorite holiday, but she missed out the year before due to a nightmarish bout of the flu. That’s why Harley is determined to throw the best Halloween street party ever this year. And, after seeing a conveniently placed billboard, she decides to get Elvira to host it.
As luck would have it, Elvira is in a similar funk. Her show has been cancelled and she needs a new gig. The two cross paths after Harley spots Elvira going to confront the executive responsible for firing her and her crew. With a club with nails in it. This leads to pie and partnership, with the promise of disaster for everyone that gets in their way.

Harley Quinn X Elvira is an ideal team-up comic
It’s no surprise that Harley Quinn and Elvira get along like chocolate and peanut butter. Both characters have a long history of breaking the fourth wall and suggestive humor. The script by Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner, to borrow an appropriate line from Mel Brooks, “rises below vulgarity.”
This is not a comic full of subtle humor. This is the kind of comic with mature and immature jokes about stuffed beavers and eating pie. In other words, par for the course for both franchises.

The artwork of Harley Quinn X Elvira proves equally twisted and appropriately animated. Conner does her usual stellar job on Harley’s dream sequences, with Juan Samu handling the lion’s share of the interiors. Naturally, all manner of sight gags and silliness are hidden in the backgrounds.
Harley Quinn X Elvira is every bit as dark and delightfully inappropriate as one would expect and/or hope. The script captures both characters perfectly, as does the artwork. This comic is the perfect kick-off to spooky season.
