Even the greatest of us is not without fault. It is a lesson that many superheroes have learned the hard way; for all their power, they are not perfect. Still, it is rare for one hero’s arrogance to result in a misstep that threatens all reality. Unfortunately, one of The Avengers was recently shown to be responsible for a disaster dating back to Secret Wars, which threatens the Marvel Universe.

Written by Jed Mackay, with art by Farid Karami, Avengers #29 continues the ongoing mystery of The Missing Moment. This null-point in time was revealed to the team by Kang the Conqueror, as a place no time-traveler could reach. Kang also warned the heroes of a new villain called Myrddin, who also sought to conquer the Missing Moment.

In their battles with Myrddin, the Avengers discovered that he had come to refer to the Missing Moment as “the Grail.” Myrddin believed it to be a flaw within the structure of reality, which might be used to bring about the end of the universe and the birth of the next. This had happened once before, when the being who became Galactus was the last survivor of his reality. Moreover, the Avengers discovered that one of their own had created this “Grail” during Secret Wars.
What hero doomed the Marvel Universe during Secret Wars?
The Avengers confronted Reed Richards regarding their findings. They also asked him to confirm what they had already come to believe; that when Mister Fantastic rebuilt the universe during Secret Wars, he had made a mistake. This was not unbelievable, as it would be impossible for any mortal mind to accurately rebuild a whole universe. What stunned them was that Reed, even at the height of his hubris, would ever make the attempt.

It remains to be seen how Richards’ folly will play out. It may become one more thing for Doctor Doom to correct over the course of One World Under Doom. Conversely, this might be foreshadowing the story of the Avengers: Secret Wars film.
