New Marvel Hero Has 9/11 Backstory, Teams With Captain America

Over the years, Marvel Comics has continually revisited the idea of successors to the Captain America title. Whether they upheld his ideals or were merely given the Super Soldier Serum, many tried to follow in Steve Rogers‘ footsteps. However, the latest volume of Cap’s comic introduces a new hero, who was inspired by the events of 9/11.

The main story of Captain America #1 centers around Steve Rogers, one week after his being revived by the Avengers. Despite being offered a place among Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Rogers seeks something familiar and comfortable. This leads him to reenlist in the United States Army, under the command of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross.

The scenes of Steve learning of how much things have changed since he was frozen are intercut with the story of another young man. His story starts with his witnessing the terrorist attacks on 9/11. This inspires him to follow in Steve Rogers footsteps, despite suffering from severe asthma, poor vision, and a slight build. This inauspicious start eventually leads to him being chosen to become a Super Soldier, if not the next Captain America.

Who is the latest Super Soldier to follow Captain America?

The final flashbacks reveal that Steve Rogers fanboy to be a young man named David Colton. Like the young Captain America, David is strong in heart but weak in body. However, his refusal to give up despite the abuse he experiences in boot camp lead to him being offered the chance of a lifetime.

The comic closes with the revelation that David was carrying a shield when Saddam Hussein was overthrown. He is also part of a new team of Howling Commandos assigned to work with Captain America. It is unclear just what David’s record as a Super Soldier might be. However, with the solicitation for the next issue questioning if Steve Rogers can “trust him to have his back,” conflict seems inevitable.

Captain America #1 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
