Miles Morales holds a unique position in the Marvel Comics multiverse. Apart from The Maker, he is the only survivor of the original Ultimate Universe. This makes him an ideal subject to explore the new Ultimate Universe created by The Maker in Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion.

Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #1 opens with Miles Morales chasing his baby sister, Billie, through a strange portal. This takes him into a strange new world of the Spider-Verse. One where Peter Parker is happily married and new to being Spider-Man. He’s also training his son, Ben Parker, who has taken control of his tech-based spider-suit to be a hero.

Miles is happy to lend them his expertise in “doing whatever a spider can.” Unfortunately, his and Billie’s arrival has not gone unnoticed. Indeed, forces both heroic and sinister are soon seeking Miles Morales for one reason or another.
Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion also an introduction to new Ultimate Universe
Those who only know Miles Morales from the Spider-Verse films will be on fine footing with Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion. The script by Deniz Camp and Cody Ziglar is truly funny for many reasons. Beyond some good gags, there’s some ironic comedy with Miles thrust into the role of teacher to an older Peter Parker. There are also some referential nods to the Spider-Verse movies, with the heroes teaming up to fight a new version of The Spot.

There’s also some humor in Peter’s discomfort with his teenage son’s worship of a hero who isn’t him. However, beyond the fun of bouncing all the Spider-Men off of one another, the book is also a solid introduction to the major players of the new Ultimate Universe. Those who haven’t had the pleasure of exploring the new setting will find this a welcome introduction.

The artwork proves equally impressive. Jonas Schraf continues to present one of the most definitive visions of the new Ultimate Universe, having drawn 2024’s Ultimate Universe: One Year In. The action is dynamic and the colors by Edgar Delgado are suitably atmospheric throughout, from the lairs of The Maker’s followers to the gritty streets of New York.
All in all, Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #1 is a great comic. It perfectly balances action and comedy, with appropriate artwork throughout. More than that, it is also a great introduction to one of the most interesting settings of modern Marvel Comics.
