Dark Horse Comics announced that Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming are reuniting to revive their classic Powers series. This coincides with the 25th anniversary of the original comic series. SuperHeroHype is presently proud to offer an exclusive look at some covers from the new series’ first six issues.
Powers is a unique combination of superhero comic and police procedural. The series centers around two Chicago police detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim. Assigned to the homicide division, they have to deal with the usual police problems, which are often confounded by costumed crimefighters. The series won an Eisner Award for Best New Series in 2001 and further inspired a live-action show on the PlayStation Network in 2015.
One of the most successful creator-owned comics of all time, Powers has run off-and-on in a comparatively erratic fashion across four volumes. Originally published by Image Comics, it was later picked up by Marvel Comics‘ Icon imprint. It then moved to DC Comics‘ Jinxworld imprint in 2018. Finally, the series moved to Dark Horse Comics in 2021.
What artists contributed covers to the Powers revival?
Powers 25, as the revival is titled, is planned to run for 12 issues. Bendis and Oeming will once again handle the scripting and artwork respectively. Nick Filardi will provide the colors, with Joshua Reed on letters.
The new Powers series will center around a new detective duo; Kutter, and her new partner, the superhero Mobius Moon. Operating under the supervision of Deena Pilgrim, who is now a Captain, the two are assigned to especially strange cases involving superheroes. This includes a mysterious murder, which leaves the two detectives questioning everything about the world before.
However, each issue will also feature original art by an all-star team of comic book legends. Mike Mignola, Stan Sakai, David Mack, Scott Hepburn, Eric Powell, and Jill Thompson are some of the creators to be confirmed. Five variant covers may be viewed below.
