Dick Grayson’s Nightwing Meets Himself as Robin During Time Travel Heist

Many people try to find themselves. For Dick Grayson, all it took was walking down the hallway in the Justice League Unlimited Watchtower. This unlikely meeting between the first Robin and his future self as Nightwing sets the stage for Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #39.

Dick Grayson’s Nightwing Meets Himself as Robin During Time Travel Heist

Written by Mark Waid, with art by Clayton Henry, Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #39 is Part Four of the ‘We Are Yesterday’ crossover. The JLU face a new terrorist group called Inferno, who are revealed as the Legion of Doom of the past. Empowered by time-travel technology, they are plundering a time where most of their members are dead or reformed.

In the middle of investigating the Legion of Doom in the past, Dick Grayson is accidentally sent to the present. This leads him to briefly meet his future self. It also leads to considerable confusion, even before the imbalance in time sends the modern Batman and Superman into the past with Nightwing.

Robin and Nightwing face unique challenges in We Are Yesterday

The imbalance in time caused by the Legion of Doom complicates things for both groups of heroes. Nightwing’s team suffers from conflicted memories, with Batman remembering both the original history and a world where Robin was lost. They also face the problem of risking a paradox as they try to return to the future.

Meanwhile, the World’s Finest team with Robin must cope with culture shock in the modern day. Superman, for instance, is confronted with a Lois Lane who knows his secret identity and has powers. That is a load too heavy for even Superman to handle, putting aside the problem of the Legion of Doom.

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #39 arrives in comic shops everywhere on May 21, 2025.
