Previous issues of Ultimate Spider-Man painted Gwen Stacy as a supportive spouse. She knew all about her husband’s double life as the Green Goblin, and approved of his vigilantism. As CEO of Oscorp, she seemed to concern herself with managing their affairs, as he investigated the technology acquired from Stark Industries. However, even as Harry was becoming a superhero, Gwen had a secret identity of her own.
Gwen Stacy is Mysterio and a real wizard
A flashback in Ultimate Spider-Man #16 reveals that Gwen Stacy is one of five people who share the Mysterio identity. They are all connected through an amulet that offers true arcane power. This is a far cry from the Earth-616 Mysterio, who was a talented illusionist but had no true magical ability.
Mysterio is a mystic society that believes the world is based on a lie. They believe the truth can only be found through embracing lies. By becoming masters of illusion, they hope to master the truth.
To that end, the flashbacks in Ultimate Spider-Man #16 further reveal that Gwen Stacy discovered the existence of The Maker. Moreover, she and the other members of Mysterio have conspired to reveal the truth to the world.
