Tales of ancient Rome have long enraptured modern audiences. Many movies and television series have examined the rise and fall of the empire and those who led it. Many comics have explored the setting as well, mixing historic fact with legend to tell tales of what might have been. Caesar’s Spy is one such tale, detailing one warrior’s quest for revenge.
Set in Rome during the last days of the Republic, Caesar’s Spy centers around the Gallic mercenary Coax. After being captured, the bold Coax takes a Roman hostage demanding ransom against his liberation. He is unaware, however, that his captive is a young Caius Julius Caesar.
It does not take the young soldier long to seek revenge when the two meet again. Coax is soon imprisoned, sold into slavery, and forced to fight as a gladiator. Thus begins a quest for liberation and revenge, as he ascends from the pits of the Coliseum to satisfy his bloodlust.

The creative team of Caesar’s Spy
The story of Caesar’s Spy is the brainchild of French author Jean-Pierre Pecau. A prolific fantasist in his homeland, Pecau is largely unknown to American audiences. However, he did recently find critical acclaim for the English translation of his steampunk reimaging of Sherlock Holmes; Moriarty: Clockwork Empire.
The artwork of Caesar’s Spy is provided by the legendary artist Max Von Fafner. Like Pecau, Von Farfner is better known among French comic readers than Americans. However, Von Fafner has developed a following among fans of Conan the Barbarian, thanks to his work on the first issue of Titan Comics‘ Savage Sword of Conan.
Caesar’s Spy arrives in comic shops everywhere on September 9, 2025. Pre-order now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books A Million, and Forbidden Planet for UK.
