Juggernaut’s Secret Defense Revealed in Amazing Spider-Man #68

An avatar of the cosmic being Cyttorak, Juggernaut is one of the more powerful beings in Marvel Comics. There is little that can slow Cain Marko once he gets moving and few things that phase him physically However, Amazing Spider-Man #68 reveals that Cain was canny enough to arrange a new defense that addresses one of his few weaknesses.

Written by Christos Gage, with art by Mark Buckingham, Amazing Spider-Man #68 continues The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man event. The story found Peter Parker called to act as Earth’s champion against the children of Cyttorak. This was part of a cosmic bargain designed to buy Cyttorak’s protection against another being called The Blight. Unfortunately, Spider-Man fell, and the X-Men (who joined the battle alongside Juggernaut) fell victim to the corrupting influence of The Blight.

The good news is that Juggernaut’s connection to Cyttorak protected him from the influence of The Blight. The bad news is that the X-Men knew Juggernaut’s biggest weakness. Namely, while he is impervious to physical harm, he has no protection from psychic attacks without his magic helmet. Many a battle with Cain Marko in the past ended after the X-Men removed his helmet and a telepath attacked him. However, Marko had a new trick up his sleeve.

Juggernaut now has a second magic helmet

When the X-Men pulled Marko’s helmet loose, they discovered that he had a second helmet. This metal helm was close-fitting, resembling the one favored by Magneto. This revelation prevented him from being immediately controlled by Kid Omega, but did nothing to save him from Psyclocke and a close-range psychic knife attack.

While Juggernaut ultimately won out thanks to being in a “place of power” thanks to the influence of Cyttorak, this revelation showed that Cain Marko is no dummy. While generally relying on brute force, Marko is usually smart enough to use his powers to their fullest. Moreover, he rarely makes the same mistakes twice and tries to plan around his weaknesses. This tenacity enables him to take on whole teams of heroes just as much as the considerable powers of Cyttorak.

Amazing Spider-Man #68 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
