The Funny Reason Captain Marvel Has a Prison in Her Basement

It is not unusual for most people to acquire various odds and ends that they put into storage. Carol Danvers is no different. However, Captain Marvel #7 reveals the amusing circumstances that led to the space-traveling hero storing an advanced prison in her basement.

Written by Alyssa Wong, with art by Jan Bazaldua, Captain Marvel #7 pits Carol and her family against a possessed Genis-Vell. The half-Kree hero had become corrupted by an energy-absorbing villain called The Omen. It was the Omen’s intention to trade Genis-Vell for Carol Danvers, whose energy powers would fuel her forever.

Despite his power, Genis-Vell was no match for the combined efforts of Captain Marvel and her allies. However, they still had the problem of containing him once he was knocked unconscious. Thankfully, Carol had the perfect prison to contain Genis-Vell in her home on Earth.

Why Captain Marvel Has a Prison in Her Basement

Carol’s basement contained advanced technology, capable of generating powerful force-fields. She felt this technology would be capable of holding Genis-Vell. The tech, she explained, was the result of a bet with Iron Man.

Tony Stark had bet Carol Danvers that he could build a prison that she couldn’t escape from. Carol proudly noted that she won the bet and, per their agreement, she got to keep all of Tony’s failed attempts to build a Captain Marvel proof prison. She also won one of his favorite cars – a Maserati MC12.

It is not revealed just what Tony Stark hoped to win if he had been successful in imprisoning Captain Marvel. Given Carol and Tony’s shared pride, it seems likely that bragging rights would have been enough of a prize. In any case, Tony’s loss provided Carol with just what she needed to contain her possessed friend.
