Nightwing 112 Highlights Why Dick Grayson’s Costume is Practical

Despite his popularity, Nightwing has come under fire for having an impractical costume. Whereas most of the Batman Family favor solid helmets and high-tech armor, Dick Grayson wears only a mask. Nightwing #112 by Tom Taylor and Sami Basri addresses this issue, showcasing why Dick Grayson’s costume is perfect for him.

The action of Nightwing #112 teams Dick Grayson with his mentor, Batman, as they chase after a kidnapper. The story is told from Batman’s perspective, as he observes his protégé in action, both alone and alongside his allies in the Titans. While he says nothing out loud, the Dark Knight is truly humbled by the hero Dick Grayson has become considering the trauma he overcame.

This analysis of Nightwing and his methods continues even in the heat of battle. When the kidnapper is confronted, Batman is amazed at how Dick Grayson is not distracted by his anger at the kidnapper, who orphaned his own nephew. It is here that Batman considers how Nightwing’s costume suits his combat style and how he overcomes its apparent shortcomings.

Nightwing Favors Mobility Over Armor

As a born acrobat, Nightwing dresses lightly so as to enhance his maneuverability. More, he is aware of his weaknesses, so he takes care to protect his face and head in a fight. Also, while his bodysuit is not as heavily armored as Batman’s, it is capable of deflecting most bullets. This enables him to focus on evading attacks and moving to where he can easily attack his opponents before they can better target him.

This would seem to rebut the points raised by Peacemaker, during his battle with Nightwing in Titans: Beast World. The agent of Amanda Waller claimed that helmets were invaluable to unpowered heroes like them. Dick Grayson responded by pulling Peacemaker’s trademark helmet around, blinding him before knocking him unconscious.

Nightwing #112 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
