HBO’s Lanterns episode 3, “OutKast,” finally explains why John Stewart created a bird construct with Hal Jordan’s ring. The Guardians of Oa secretly watched John throughout his childhood by observing him through birds. That surveillance built a subconscious connection between birds and the cosmic forces monitoring his life.
This revelation emerges during an extended interview between John and an unnamed Guardian, played by Laura Linney. The episode traces John’s story back to the night the Guardians visited his father, John Stewart Sr. They asked him a simple question: was he afraid? His honest answer disqualified him from ever wearing a Green Lantern ring.
Bernadette, John’s mother, then learned her son had the genetic potential for future selection. She confronted the Guardian about what that demand meant for her family. “Do you understand how unfair it is to ask a Black man in America if he’s afraid?” she said. “Even in space, y’all don’t consider us.” From that moment, both parents committed to raising John beyond any standard the Guardians could set.
Their methods, however, blurred the line between training and abuse. John reportedly suggested the terrifying William Tell exercise himself to prove his fearlessness. Even his later shift to veganism traces back to formative childhood experiences under his parents’ intense regime.
The episode also covers John’s dishonorable discharge from the Marines after a sniper mission in Russia. He spent nine months studying his target before Hal Jordan swooped in and finished the job. Jordan’s interference left behind a massive geopolitical mess.
The Guardians eventually chose Stewart as Jordan’s covert replacement, planning to activate him when Jordan grew too unstable. Jordan, however, reached the Stewart family first and told John he would only become a Green Lantern “over his dead body.”
