Anthony Bourdain‘s graphic novel Get Jiro! is becoming an ultra-violent animated series. The new red-band trailer gives fans their first look at the animated adaptation.
The series comes from Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios. It follows Jiro, a mysterious sushi chef in a post-apocalyptic, near-future Los Angeles where chefs wield the most power. Brian Tee voices Jiro, while Titus Welliver, Alison Pill, and Justin Kirk also star.

What do we see in the Get Jiro trailer
The 1-minute, 42-second trailer shows restaurants operating like criminal territories. Armed chefs patrol their territories, while customers risk violence to secure tables. Jiro enters this world with his own strict rules about cuisine.
The preview also gives a glimpse of his deadly knife skills during several fights. His dislike of soy sauce leads to one particularly violent moment in the footage. The trailer makes food just as important to the action as the characters themselves.
Bourdain and Joel Rose wrote the original graphic novel, which features artwork by Langdon Foss. The first Get Jiro! graphic novel was published in 2012 and became a New York Times bestseller. DC describes it as a story where “master chefs rule the town like crime lords,” and people fight for seats at top restaurants.
The series was developed by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, who previously worked together on Sharper and Superstore. Jordan Blum and Sam Register also serve as executive producers.
Adult Swim President Michael Ouweleen said the network was drawn to Bourdain and Rose’s graphic novels. He said, “Like everything Bourdain did, this story starts with food and then generously reaches out into all directions to cover culture, obsession, and what makes humanity problematic, but in the end, inspiring.”
The 10-episode series premieres on Adult Swim on October 3 at midnight during Toonami. It will stream on HBO Max the following day.
The animated project expands Bourdain’s fictional world beyond the original comics. The follow-up graphic novel Get Jiro: Blood and Sushi later explored Jiro’s origins and connection to a Yakuza crime family.
