Spider-Man 4 star Tramell Tillman says joining the MCU was a frustrating process. Marvel kept details about his role closely guarded.
In a new GQ interview, Tillman explained how the secrecy affected his experience. He plays Bill Metzger, a government official who helps deal with the damage caused by superheroes.
Tillman had wanted to join a Marvel movie for some time. His team eventually told him that director Destin Daniel Cretton wanted to meet with him, but even that conversation came with strict secrecy. He said, “I wasn’t even sure specifically how the character would fit into the world of the movie, and I’m pretty sure they had to play their cards very close to the chest because they weren’t sure if I was going to accept it.”
He said he was “pretty sure” he had to sign NDAs before the meeting. The actor, who won an Emmy last year for his supporting role in Apple TV+’s Severance, also called the process difficult.

Tillman’s character, William “Bill” Metzger, leads the Department of Damage Control (DODC). The role ties Spider-Man: Brand New Day to the wider mutant saga. Trailers confirm Metzger is tasked with tracking a new metahuman.
In the comics, Metzger is an anti-mutant figure from X-Men lore. His introduction sets up Damage Control as an early foe for mutants in the MCU. Reports note Tillman signed a multi-picture deal that could include future X-Men films.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day premiered on July 27, 2026, and opened July 31. The film stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo. Tillman joined the cast in August 2025, though his character name was not disclosed at first.
The movie is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. It launches Phase Six of the MCU and introduces the first major mutant, Jean Grey. Tillman’s Metzger appears as a grounded threat amid the superhero chaos.
