Sadie Sink‘s fan-favorite Marvel character may have established her place in the MCU with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but she does not appear in her iconic costume. According to the movie’s costume designer, Sanja Milkovic Hays, it was a deliberate decision not to show Jean Grey in her comic-accurate suit.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day costume designer explains Jean Grey’s look
In a recent interview with Comic Book Resources‘ Sean O’Connell, Hays noted that she did refer to Jean Grey’s green and yellow look while styling her costume for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. However, she refrained from giving the X-Men character a comic-accurate costume as it did not align with the film’s narrative.
“It’s the colors; the green and yellow are connected to the character,” Hays remarked. “But obviously, the decision was made that she doesn’t wear a superhero costume, because that wouldn’t work for the story, right? The story is about a girl and her sister. We didn’t know who she was until very, very late in the movie. So she had to look like a cool girl. A very cool girl.”
In her first MCU appearance, Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey initially appears to be an antagonist in the story. However, it is gradually revealed that she is simply trying to retrieve her lost sister from the clutches of the Department of Damage Control. Given that Jean has not yet joined up with Professor Charles Xavier and his team in the MCU, her costume from the X-Men comics will likely appear later in the franchise once the new X-Men movie is released after Avengers: Secret Wars. Early casting announcements for the upcoming reboot have already started to come out, with several other key X-Men having been officially cast. Numerous other actors from Fox’s original X-Men movies are also slated to appear in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.
