Sadie Sink has finally opened up about Jean Grey’s controversial role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The actress explained why she never saw the powerful mutant as a traditional villain.
Jean Grey becomes one of Peter Parker’s biggest threats in the film. But her actions are driven by anger toward the Department of Damage Control, which targeted her and tried to study her mind-control abilities. Jean can enter other people’s minds and control their bodies. Those powers put her on a collision course with Spider-Man, who tries to stop her.
Instead of portraying the character as a one-dimensional villain, Sink plays her as someone deeply hurt by what happened to her. While Jean’s decisions carry dangerous consequences, the film also gives audiences a clear understanding of why she makes them.
Why Sadie Sink believes Jean Grey was never the villain
In an interview with Variety, Sadie Sink shared that Jean’s actions made complete sense from her character’s point of view in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The MCU star said, “They told me that I was the villain, but that you’re not actually the villain, which is how I played her. I don’t really want to lean into, like this bad guy aura. Because in her brain it’s totally justified. Which I mean, I agree. I think it is.”
The role makes Sink the third actor to play Jean Grey in a live-action movie. Famke Janssen first portrayed her in Fox’s original X-Men movies, while Sophie Turner took over the role in the later reboot series.
Sink is expected to return as Jean in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men film. She has already spoken with director Jake Schreier about the character’s future, saying Jean’s struggle to control her powers will be a key part of her growth and make her even more layered.
Variety also noted that Sink would not confirm whether her Marvel contract includes two films or 10. “I can’t really say …” she told the publication, keeping her long-term MCU future a mystery.
