The Odyssey is on track to surpass $1 billion at the global box office today, marking another milestone for Christopher Nolan. Once it does, it will become Nolan’s third billion-dollar film, surpassing Oppenheimer‘s total worldwide box office gross. The film was released three weeks ago, debuting to $123 million in its opening weekend in the U.S.
At the time of writing, the film has been averaging about $21 million per week. The film’s latest reported worldwide box office total stands at more than $988 million.
Following its release, the film earned critical acclaim and strong audience reception. Crucially, The Odyssey surpassing the $1 billion milestone would signify something greater than its individual performance.
Why this $1 billion hit matters more than Nolan’s previous ones
Once the film crosses $1 billion, it will be Nolan’s first film to do so that isn’t based on an existing IP like Batman. It is also a nearly 3-hour-long R-rated epic. After reaching the milestone, it will become the first R-rated film to cross $1 billion without being based on a comic book, anime property, or an existing long-running franchise.
As of 2026, Nolan’s highest-grossing film is 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, which was the finale to a critically acclaimed trilogy. Nolan’s previous film, Oppenheimer, also rated R, grossed more than $983 million worldwide. While The Odyssey faced criticism from some online audiences, its box office performance proves how appealing it was to both younger and older filmgoers.
The Odyssey continues to face stiff competition from Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which grossed $500 million within a week of its release. The latter has also secured an IMAX release, ending The Odyssey’s exclusive run in the premium format.
The Odyssey is currently playing in theaters worldwide, along with having shows at select IMAX 70MM theaters.
