Spider-Man: Brand New Day just shattered a record that even the Avengers couldn’t protect. The latest box office milestone puts the web-slinger ahead of one of Endgame’s most impressive achievements.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the fastest to $500 million domestically
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has become the fastest film to gross $500 million at the domestic box office, Deadline reports. The Sony/Marvel Studios sequel achieved the milestone in just seven days of release. Notably, the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film surpassed the previous record held by Avengers: Endgame, which crossed that threshold in eight days back in 2019.
Furthermore, the Tom Holland and Zendaya starrer now ranks as the 23rd movie to earn over $500 million in North America. Star Wars: The Force Awakens still leads that list with $936.6 million earned domestically. Meanwhile, The Force Awakens took 10 days to pass the half-billion mark, while Spider-Man: No Way Home needed 12 days in 2021.
Additionally, Brand New Day earned approximately $27 million or more on Thursday in the U.S. and Canada. IMAX auditoriums also began projecting the sequel after missing its opening suite of premium formats. The film will co-share IMAX screens with Universal’s The Odyssey, which continues to report near-sellouts in major markets. As a result, Spider-Man will hold all premium large format screens through the weekend. After Thursday, the running domestic total stands at an estimated $508.8 million.
On Wednesday, Brand New Day grossed $32.7 million at the domestic box office. Consequently, that figure made it the second-best Wednesday ever for a non-opening title. Only The Force Awakens performed better on a Wednesday, earning $38 million on December 23, 2015.
Looking ahead, Brand New Day now faces its sophomore weekend, where it could challenge another Force Awakens record. The Force Awakens holds the second-weekend benchmark at $149.2 million. In contrast, counterprogramming arrives this weekend with Universal’s One Night Only, Eli Roth’s Ice Cream Man, and Searchlight’s Super Troopers 3.
