Edge of Tomorrow 2 Report Says a Major A-Lister Is Joining Tom Cruise

Industry scooper MyTimeToShineHello recently shared on X that “Charlize Theron is being eyed for a role in Edge of Tomorrow 2.” The sequel to the 2014 sci-fi hit has spent years in development limbo. However, casting rumors now suggest the project may finally be gaining real momentum.

Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt will both reprise their roles in the follow-up. Director Doug Liman is also on board to helm the sequel once again. He recently sat down with Cruise to rewatch the original after years away from it. “Tom and I just actually rewatched it about two months ago, because I hadn’t seen it in 10 years,” Liman told Empire. “I was like, ‘Wow, that is a really good movie.'”

Meanwhile, scooper Daniel RPK previously reported that filming could kick off in fall 2026. Collider recently threw cold water on that report, however. The outlet revealed that Edge of Tomorrow 2 is not in active development right now. That said, it also confirmed the project has not been officially shelved.

Warner Bros. Pictures reportedly still plans to make the sequel in the future. The studio has consistently expressed interest in revisiting the franchise over the years. Liman acknowledged this in a conversation with Total Film. “I do think there’s probably no better compliment to a movie than people wanting for there to be a sequel,” he said.

Christopher McQuarrie penned the screenplay, and Emily Blunt confirmed the script was complete in August 2023. Liman has teased that the sequel would “revolutionize how people make sequels.” The original film grossed approximately $370 million worldwide against a reported $178 million budget. Adding Theron to the cast could further boost anticipation for the long-awaited follow-up.
