James Gunn breaks down Auggie Smith’s brutal death in Peacemaker Season 2
James Gunn in Peacemaker: The Official Podcast explained that the twist in Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 7 occurred when Adrian Chase / Vigilante stabbed Auggie as the former White Dragon tried to protect Chris and send him home safely.
Gunn noted that the editing emphasized how long Chris sees Vigilante in the window before realizing what is about to happen. “[Vigilante] stabs Auggie Smith to death,” Gunn said. He described it as an intentionally abrupt and brutal moment.
Robert Patrick’s alternate-universe Auggie, known as the Blue Dragon, was portrayed as a compassionate and virtuous father. This contrasted with the original White Dragon from Season 1. Gunn stressed that this version of Auggie showed compassion for Chris.
He recognized that his son was not a good man but still showed him love. Auggie’s perspective was rooted in the belief: “I fight the madmen, murderers, and monsters in front of me because that’s all I can control.”
The podcast revealed that killing Auggie underscored how nothing in Peacemaker is clean-cut. Vigilante defended his actions by claiming Auggie had tied up Economos. Gunn emphasized that he designed the scene to feel sudden and devastating. Danielle Brooks and Steve Agee described the stabbing as “so harshly” executed that it shocked both the characters and the viewers.
John Cena’s performance in the aftermath also drew attention. Gunn said Cena’s scream and breakdown reflected Chris reliving the trauma of losing his brother. Chris pushes everyone off and declares, “It’s not my world that’s wrong…It’s me.” This emotional climax is tied directly to Chris’ guilt and his belief that he causes pain in every reality.
Gunn concluded that Auggie’s death marked a turning point for Chris. It also served as a tragic reminder of the cycle of violence that defines Peacemaker.
