Buffy The Vampire Slayer Comic Bites Into a New Publisher

After 20 years, the comic book based off of Joss Whedon’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer is getting a new publisher. While currently at home with Dark Horse Comics, the series will be shifting to Boom! Studios beginning in 2019.

Boom! Studios is not only planning the usual monthly release, but also graphic novels and a limited series according to IGN. Although it is unclear if the publisher plans to start fresh or continue what is already there, it is quite exciting to see this iconic character live on and get new life. Dark Horse’s comics picked up where the classic show left off, appropriately titled as TV seasons, and sometimes even had Whedon in the writer’s seat.

Speaking to IGN, Boom! Studios Executive Editor Jeanine Schaefer shared her passion and excitement saying, “I remember watching the premiere of Buffy the Vampire Slayer over 20 years ago, and the feeling of empowerment that came with seeing a girl get to kick ass and have flaws at the same time, and to not apologize for who she was. It’s an honor to oversee that world for a new generation and to bring them that same feeling of knowing your greatest power comes from being true to who you are. Buffy is about love at its core, love for your friends and yourself. The characters are allowed to be equal parts human and monster, and seeing them struggle to balance those parts of themselves, the same parts we all struggle with, is why it still resonates with audiences of all ages and backgrounds today.”

The last issue under Dark Horse, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 12: The Reckoning #4, was released this week and their license expires at the end of the year. An interesting point to note is that the rights to Buffy belong to 20th Century Fox, who also own a piece of BOOM! Studios. With Disney recently buying Fox, we will have to wait and see if that will effect the series moving forward.
