From Columbia Pictures and Neal Moritz
Sony's Columbia Pictures is in early talks to acquire the film rights for a big-screen adaptation of Flash Gordon that Breck Eisner would direct and Neal Moritz would produce. Eisner would also executive produce, says The Hollywood Reporter. The trade says:
"Flash" was originally a science fiction newspaper comic strip drawn by Alex Raymond in the 1930s and was created to compete with another sci-fi strip, "Buck Rogers." The strip was first adapted to the screen via Buster Crabbe serials and made into a lavish 1980 film starring Sam Jones but remembered more for its Queen score. Flash was a sports player who travels to the planet Mongo with his lady love, Dale Arden, and the mad scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov. There, they discover a world ruled by Ming the Merciless and meet strange inhabitants such as the Hawkmen and the Sharkmen. There are no writers on board the project yet. I'm not much of a fan of Flash Gordon. One reason is,when I would go to video stores to
find the VHS movies of THE FLASH,I would always
find FLASH GORDON instead, and everytime that happend,it was like Flash Gordon was mocking me.I have seen the movie that came out in 1980.
I thought it was okay, but not the best. But everytime I would search for The Flash, there it
was...Flash Gordon...also the movie FLED would
also be taunting me as well. Finally I was able
to find The Flash movies on VHS,and I also have
the entire season on DVD.So whenever I hear of
Flash Gordon,I always remember finding that movie and never being able to find The Flash. Report Abuse

The Sci Fi show was crap. It changed everything around for the sake of budget. Instead of going into space they go through "dimensional portals" or some shit (aka dissolve fx) and wind up on Mongo, which is some basment of a factory. The ray guns looked like hair driers, Ming looked like a surfer- the whole thing was a disaster. I'm still upset about it. I hope they learn from that. Report Abuse

I am soooo up for a new big screen Flash Gordon flick. I hope it keeps the Queen song (OR AN INSTRUMENTAL ORCHESTRAL VERSION) but is more "serious" and less campy (although I DO LOVE THE CAMPYNESS OF THE 80 FLICK).
I didn't dig too much on the Sci-Fi Channel version. I thought it was too divergent from the classic comic strips. Too "edgy". I've always loved the Hawkmen. They were cool.
To: Jere: Master of the Universe (heh-heh, great handle, man)
There is going to be a new Buck Rogers big screen flick.
This site had a thread up about a couple of weeks ago on it. Frank Miller was mentioned as a possible director on it.
"HEIL, JERE, HEIL!!! RULER OF THE UNIVERSE!!!"
---(paraphrase) All of Emperor Ming The Merciless' subjects when we first see Ming in the 1980 Flash Gordon flick.
---Later!
P.S.
"FLASH! AHHH-AHHHHHHH!!!!!
SAVIOR OF THE UNIVERSE!!!!!!!!"

Correction:
In my above post, I stated that I always loved the Hawkmen, but I meant to seperate that from the mention of the Sci-Fi Channel series.
I meant the Hawkmen from the old comic strips.
