Rutger Hauer on Batman Begins & Sin City

Dutch actor Rutger Hauer talked to columnists Marilyn Beck and Stacey Jenel Smith about his starring roles in both Batman Begins and Sin City.

When Batman Begins is unveiled in June, moviegoers will see that director Christopher Nolan “has totally reinvented the Batman story. This is more human. It’s more character-driven. It’s closer to the skin. That doesn’t mean it’s not a big fiction story with quite a bit of effects going on.”

Hauer plays CEO of Wayne Enterprises in the film. Hauer says his character is one of a string of people encountered by Bale whose relationships help form the Dark Knight he is to become.

In directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s Sin City, Hauer plays “a kind of master of the absurd, a cardinal who is beyond wicked. This movie is so damn interesting and daring. And you know Robert Rodriguez resigned from the Directors Guild when they wouldn’t allow him to have Frank Miller co-direct it with him. It had to be painful. For that, my chapeau goes off to him.”
