Three years ago, Insomniac Games delivered a fresh spin on your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Now, the studio is hoping to do the same for another beloved Marvel character. In addition to their highly-anticipated Spider-Man PS4 sequel, Insomniac has announced plans for Marvel’s Wolverine, which is also coming to the Playstation 5.
The game’s announcement teaser finds Wolvie in an environment he knows a little too well: a bar. And it looks like he’s just finished putting the smackdown on a handful of other patrons. Unfortunately, his moment of well-earned peace and quiet doesn’t last. Because when one of his victims rises with a switchblade, he pops out his adamantium claws, ready for round 2.
Wolverine has shown up in plenty of Marvel video games over the years. But Insomniac’s upcoming adventure marks his first solo outing since 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine (which, unlike the film that inspired it, earned surprisingly decent reviews). Apparently, the developers began kicking around ideas for the game while they were still working on Spider-Man PS4. And in a new post on the official Playstation Blog, Insomniac’s Ryan Schneider detailed their aims for the iconic mutant.
“In the vein of our Spider-Man games, our goal here is to not only respect the DNA of what makes the character so popular,” wrote Schneider. “But also look for opportunities to make it feel fresh and truly reflect the Insomniac spirit. Even though Marvel’s Wolverine is very early in development, from what I’ve seen of its emotional narrative and cutting-edge gameplay (see what I did there?), the team is already creating something truly special.”
Brian Horton and Cameron Christian are leading the charge on Marvel’s Wolverine as creative director and game director, respectively. Insomniac still hasn’t announced a release date.
