Lanterns Clip Reveals Potential Big John Stewart Lore Change in James Gunn’s DCU

A new Lanterns clip suggests the show is making a big lore change regarding the John Stewart character, played by Aaron Pierre. More details will almost certainly be revealed when the third episode of the series is released this weekend.

Created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, Lanterns is the new Green Lantern DCU show that comes from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television. With the first two episodes now available to watch on HBO Max, it stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner in addition to Pierre.

A new clip from the third episode of Lanterns has been shared on X. The footage reveals that John Stewart was selected to be a Green Lantern by the Guardians when he was just a baby. Check out the clip below:

What the John Stewart lore change could mean for Lanterns going forward

In the video, John Stewart’s mother, who is played by Nicole Ari Parker, explains, “When you were a baby, the Guardians — the people that run the whole universe — came to tell us that they want you to be the next Green Lantern. They said that they would train you, and they would send birds to watch over us. They report back to the Guardians.”

“That’s why you like birds so much, son,” John’s father adds. His dad also explains that being picked to be a Green Lantern is the reason why John is treated differently than his siblings, whether it be sleeping in a different room or going to a different school than them.

This marks a lore change as, in DC Comics, John didn’t know that the Guardians of the Universe had been watching him until he was an adult. What this means for the show going forward remains to be seen; however, it is worth pointing out that Lanterns is a show shrouded in mystery, and there may be some missing context that’ll be better explained in the new episode. One chunk of DCU fans are convinced that the show is hiding an Atrocitus reveal, another chunk think Kelly Macdonald’s Kerry character has a connection to Kate Cane, and a third chunk are still trying to figure out the difference between Manhunters and Martian Manhunter — all of which to say, Lanterns is constantly keeping audience members guessing, and there could be more to this supposed lore change than meets the eye.

We’ll find out more in the coming weeks, as new Lanterns episodes continue to be released on Sundays.
