RoboCop Cast Update: Prime Video TV Show Taps Beloved Godzilla Star as New Alex Murphy

Prime Video‘s RoboCop just found its Officer Alex Murphy. The upcoming TV series has cast a beloved Godzilla star in the lead role. The casting offers a fresh take on the iconic character introduced nearly four decades ago.

Dan Stevens is set to play Alex Murphy in the upcoming RoboCop reboot, Deadline reports. As per the report, Stevens will play both Murphy and his cyborg alter ego, RoboCop, in the new series. The 43-year-old will take over the role originally played by Peter Weller in Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 film.

The casting news comes a month after Amazon MGM Studios officially greenlit the project. The series had been in development for two years. The English actor quickly emerged as the leading candidate during the casting process.

What else do we know about the new RoboCop TV show?

The new live-action RoboCop TV show comes from showrunner Peter Ocko and Blumhouse Atomic Monster. Ocko wrote the eight-episode series, which will offer a contemporary take on the original story.

“A giant tech conglomerate collaborates with the local police department to introduce a technologically advanced enforcer to combat rising crime — a police officer who’s part man, part machine,” the official logline reads.

The new reboot series will explore themes of technology, identity, and corporate power. Amazon MGM Studios previously stated that the show will revisit questions raised by the original 1987 movie while creating something new for modern audiences.

Ocko will executive produce alongside James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett through Blumhouse Atomic Monster. Danielle Bozzone will serve as co-executive producer. Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, who co-wrote the original RoboCop, will also executive produce.

Deadline also reported that RoboCop was among the first batch of MGM titles identified for series development following Amazon’s acquisition of the studio. The original RoboCop spawned two sequels and a 2014 remake, with Peter Weller, Robert Burke, and Joel Kinnaman all previously playing the lead.

Prime Video’s RoboCop does not have a premiere date yet.
