‘Phenomenal’: Why God of War TV Show Has Won Over Fans With Dave Bautista Casting

Dave Bautista‘s casting in the God of War TV show has won over fans. After an incident with Ryan Hurst, the lead character of the video game adaptation was replaced with the Guardians of the Galaxy star.

The American actor and retired professional wrestler, Dave Bautista, has been officially cast as Kratos in the live-action series God of War.

The news of this casting was received positively by fans, who took to X to express their satisfaction. A fan commented, “I feel so bad for Ryan Hurst, but this casting is phenomenal.”

While another fan added, “Ryan Hurst tears a bicep, and they immediately replace him with the guy who looks like he eats bicep tears for breakfast. Kratos would approve. Soft casting is dead.”

Fans reacted positively to the casting choice because they believed Bautista could easily play the main video game character. A fan wrote, “Well, it’s good they convinced like one of three people on earth who could be able to pull this off.” Another one wrote, “We’re in the middle of an ALL TIME casting for the God of War TV series adaptation! I can feel it—Dave Bautista is gonna be perfect for the role of Kratos!”

Why Ryan Hurst was replaced as Kratos in the God of War TV show

Kratos’ role was initially given to Ryan Hurst in Amazon’s God of War series. However, during filming a stunt on the Vancouver set, Hurst suffered a severe torn bicep injury.

This injury required surgery, which forced the production to pause in July. Since the recovery time for this surgery was too long, Amazon and Sony decided to recast the role.

Although the news of Bautista’s casting was well received, fans also hope Ryan Hurst recovers from his injuries and takes on other roles in the series. For instance, upon hearing the news, a fan reposted, “Oh, that’s really great casting. I feel bad for Ryan Hurst, though. I hope he plays Thor at least when he’s better.”

However, a fan pointed out that the role of Thor has already been given to Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, while adding, “They could have him play that one giant guy that was with Freyr in Ragnarok, though,” referring to Surtr.

Amazon’s live-action God of War series will restart production in October 2026 with a new cast member. Ronald D. Moore will serve as the showrunner. As of now, there is no official release date.
