Why It: Welcome to Derry Will Likely Have a Completely New Cast for Season 2

HBO Max has officially greenlit It: Welcome to Derry Season 2, promising another spine-chilling prequel story. However, fans should not expect to see the original stars return in the new chapter. It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 has already undergone major creative changes behind the scenes. Now, the cast could also undergo a major overhaul due to the timeline.

Bill Skarsgård will reprise his role as Pennywise, a shape-shifting cosmic entity in Stephen King’s prequel television series. However, the rest of the cast will likely be completely new. The first season took place in 1962, while the new season will jump nearly three decades into the past.

Season 2 will take place in 1935 during the Great Depression. That decade-long jump in timeline makes it unlikely that the original cast from Season 1 will return, as most of them wouldn’t have been alive yet. Instead, the story may introduce a new group of characters connected to one of Derry’s darkest historical events.

What else do we know about It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 so far?

The official logline of It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 reads, “Season two takes place in 1935 during the Great Depression and centers on the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry to buy ammo and end up facing unimaginable horror.”

HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television will produce the new season, adapting Stephen King’s critically acclaimed novel, It. Brad Caleb Kane serves as the showrunner for Season 2, while in the first season, one of the series’ developers, Jason Fuchs, was alongside Kane. Barbara and Andy Muschietti develop the second season and also serve as executive producers under their Double Dream production banner. They are joined by Kane, Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jamie Travis, and Dhana Gilbert.

Production executives confirmed the historical time jump as they announced the renewal. Clancy Collins White, President of Creative Affairs at Warner Bros. Television, stated, “We know It: Welcome to Derry will continue to captivate viewers with its spine-tingling new journey into the 1930s for Season 2.”

The first season, consisting of eight episodes, is currently streaming on HBO Max.
