Daredevil Got an ‘Upgrade’ for MCU Return in Born Again, Says Charlie Cox

Daredevil: Born Again star Charlie Cox has revealed that the blind vigilante’s small screen return came with an “upgrade” thanks to the show now being produced by Marvel Studios instead of the defunct Marvel Television division.

While Born Again doesn’t mark Cox’s first appearance as Matt Murdock/Daredevil in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Daredevil concluded on Netflix in 2018, it is the actor’s first leading role since the character was brought back to the shared universe in 2021 for a memorable cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home. When Born Again was first conceived, it was not expected to be a direct continuation of Netflix’s Daredevil, with the plan instead being to neither contradict the events of the original series nor make reference to them.

However, after not liking the footage that had already been shot while on pause due to the actors’ and writers’ strikes, Marvel Studios decided to massively overhaul Daredevil: Born Again. This resulted in the studio acknowledging the six series in Netflix’s Defenders Saga — Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher — as MCU canon, leading to Daredevil: Born Again being reworked as a direct sequel to the Netflix version.

Speaking with TVLine, Cox addressed how Born Again is technically Daredevil Season 4 even though Marvel and Disney+ are promoting it as Season 1 of a new show.

“It’s an interesting tightrope to walk, really, because we want to make sure that we include the elements of the show that made it popular and successful in the first place [on Netflix], the things that we discovered in the original show that landed with the audience,” he explained. “At the same time, we’re on Disney+ now, we’re calling it ‘Season 1’ even though the history is the same, and so we want to attract a new audience. We don’t want to suggest that people need to go back and see three seasons in order to understand and follow this story. So that’s an interesting jumping off place to achieve.”

Cox added that the characters are essentially the same as they were in the Netflix version, although they have “changed, naturally, by the circumstances that they’ve been through, the experiences they’ve had.” The actor also suggested that fans can look forward to a higher production quality in Daredevil: Born Again, explaining how “being part of Marvel Studios now, there’s a little upgrade to the show in terms of its look and its feel and its action, which is pretty cool.”

Charlie Cox isn’t the only returning Daredevil alum for Born Again revival

Besides Cox, other Daredevil alums returning for Born Again include Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/Punisher, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Wilson Bethel as Benjamin Poindexter, and Ayelet Zurer as Vanessa Marianna-Fisk.

Daredevil: Born Again premieres on Disney+ on March 4, 2025, with its first two episodes.
