Waller DCU update

DC’s James Gunn Gives Brief Waller Update, Debunks Casting Rumor

James Gunn has debunked a casting rumor regarding the upcoming Waller series.

On Threads, Gunn was asked if there was any truth to the rumor that In the Heights and The Color Purple star Corey Hawkins had been cast in the upcoming Waller DCU series.

“Scripts aren’t finished. Haven’t started the casting process. (So no),” Gunn answered.

What do we know about DC Studio’s Waller series?

Announced in May 2022, Waller serves as a spin-off to Peacemaker that will see Viola Davis once again reprise her role as Amanda Waller. The series was originally supposed to premiere before the second season of Peacemaker; however, production was delayed in 2023 because of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes.

The series is written by Christal Henry, who also serves as an executive producer on the series with Gunn and Peter Safran. Henry additionally serves as co-showrunner on Waller alongside Jeremy Carver.

Further plot details for Waller remain under wraps at this time.

Waller will be part of the first slate of projects, titled “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters,” in Gunn and Safran’s forthcoming DCU. The DCU officially kicks off in late 2024 with an animated Creature Commandos series. The voice cast for the show includes Frank Grillo, Maria Bakalova, Indira Varma, Zoë Chao, Alan Tudyk, David Harbour, Sean Gunn, Steve Agee, Davis, and Anya Chalotra.

Following that, a new Superman movie, which is currently in production, flies into theaters in July 2025. Written and directed by Gunn, the movie will star David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Anthony Carrigan, María Gabriela de Faría, Sara Sampaio, Skyler Gisondo, Nicholas Hoult, Terence Rosemore, and Wendell Pierce.

DC Studios has not yet officially announced a release date for Waller.
