Daredevil: Born Again Casts Genneya Walton in Journalist Role

Marvel Studios‘ upcoming Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again has found its latest cast member in Candy Cane Lane star Genneya Walton.

According to Deadline, details regarding Walton’s Daredevil: Born Again character are being kept under wraps. However, the actor is said to be playing a journalist with ties to a character from the Netflix’s Daredevil.

Notably, journalism has always been central to the Daredevil mythos. In Season 1 of the Netflix series, Vondie Curtis-Hall played Ben Urich, a reporter for the New York Bulletin who became an ally to Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and a mentor figure to Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll). Series antagonist Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) murdered Urich towards the end of Daredevil’s first season, with Karen later taking his place at the Bulletin.

As for Walton, the 24-year-old actor got her start in the 2014 direct-to-video film An American Girl: Isabelle Dances Into the Spotlight. She later appeared in shows like Disney Channel’s Jessie, CBS’s Extant, and Nickelodeon’s The Thundermans before landing her first leading role in Netflix’s Project Mc2. More recently, she’s starred in the Netflix series BlackAF and Never Have I Ever, as well as Hulu’s Darby and the Dead and Prime Video’s Candy Cane Lane.

Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Again follows up on the Netflix series

Set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Daredevil: Born Again sees Cox and D’Onofrio reprise their roles as Daredevil and Kingpin, respectively. Jon Bernthal reprises his role as Frank Castle/the Punisher, a character he first played in the second season of Netflix’s Daredevil.

Initially, Born Again was expected to be more of a soft reboot than a direct continuation of the Netflix series. However, following a creative overhaul that saw Dario Scardapane take over as showrunner, the Disney+ series will reportedly hue closer to its predecessor — which has officially been confirmed as MCU canon. As such, Cox’s Daredevil co-leads Woll and Elden Henson will now reprise their roles as Karen Page and Foggy Nelson, respectively, in Born Again. (The two were previously absent from the cast list.) Similarly, Wilson Bethel will reportedly reprise his role as Ben Poindexter/Bullseye from Daredevil Season 3.

That said, Born Again still features a slew of newcomers, with Walton being only the latest. The show also stars Margarita Levieva, Michael Gandolfini, Nikki M. James, Clark Johnson, Arty Froushan, Zabryna Guevara, Michael Gaston, Marc Geller, and Harris Yulin. Fellow newcomer Sandrine Holt will play Vanessa Fisk (née Marianna), a character previously played by Ayelet Zurer in Netflix’s Daredevil.

Born Again was initially expected to debut on Disney+ this spring. However, it was delayed as a result of the Hollywood strikes and subsequent creative overhaul. According to a U.S. copyright filing, the series is now targeting an early-2025 premiere. Production is currently underway.
