Loki EP Teases the TVA’s Impact on the MCU Moving Forward

Kevin Wright, executive producer on Marvel StudiosLoki, knows that introducing the Time Variance Authority and other aspects of the multiverse laid the groundwork for future projects set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To him, these are “tools for other filmmakers that come in and tell their stories.”

In an interview with Screen Rant, Wright discussed the thought that initially went into creating the surreal backdrop of Loki. “So what I would say is coming into this, we knew setting up our rules for time travel and how they would work in a Season 1 took a lot of legwork and it was all about making it as simple and fun as possible so that you could explore character drama.” He added, “And then we decided to make it harder on ourselves and introduce a multiverse by the end of it.”

Loki is setting up a cool tapestry for MCU filmmakers

The creative team on Loki wanted to be sure that viewers could enjoy the narrative without getting confused by its trappings. “Because a multiverse isn’t exciting or it would very quickly become unexciting if it isn’t grounded in the characters and what it means for them, which is why we lean so heavily into our philosophy and theology and what these characters are doing,” said Wright. In regard to the interconnected nature of the MCU, he added, “I think we are naturally trying to set up as cool of a tapestry as we can with the tools for other filmmakers that come in and tell their stories. I think the TVA is a big part of that.”

Wright teased some developments coming down the road. “…I think we just try to give everybody the tools and the excitement to pick up the toys and run with it going down the road,” he said. “And they will. But I don’t want to spoil that.”

Season 2 of Loki is here

The first season of Loki premiered on Disney+ in June 2021. Tom Hiddleston reprises his role of Loki, the brother of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and a former MCU antagonist, who found himself lost between timelines and was apprehended by the TVA. The institution initially appeared to be protecting the “Sacred Timeline” and keep the universe from collapsing, but the sinister goals of its originator, Jonathan Majors‘ Kang, were gradually revealed.

Season 2 of Loki is airing now. There will be a total of six episodes in the season, which will be released weekly through Thursday, November 9.
