Drag Star Jinkx Monsoon Joins the Cast of Doctor Who

Doctor Who doesn’t often feature regular characters who are American. And when it does, like Sixth Doctor companion Peri, they’re not always played by Americans. That’s changing in the upcoming season, with Portland, Oregon’s own Jinkx Monsoon joining the cast. The first drag queen to win two seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Monsoon will presumably appear in drag, being billed under their stage name rather than as Jerick Hoffer. The role is described as “major,” but that’s the only detail so far.

Via the official Doctor Who site, showrunner Russell T Davies said: “In a galaxy of comets and supernovas, here comes the biggest star of all. Jinkx Monsoon is on a collision course with the TARDIS, and Doctor Who will never be the same again!”

Added Monsoon, “I’m honoured, thrilled, and utterly excited to join Doctor Who! Russell T Davies is a visionary and a brilliant writer— I can’t wait to get into the weeds with him and the crew! I hope there’s room in the TARDIS for my luggage.”

Doctor Who returns in November with three episodes starring David Tennant. New Doctor Ncuti Gatwa takes over for the traditional holiday special. In the U.S., and everywhere else outside of the UK and Ireland, these will be the first episodes to debut on Disney+.
