Hayden Christensen Teases More Appearances as Darth Vader

Aside from his brief vocal cameo in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, nearly 17 years have passed since Hayden Christensen last played Anakin Skywalker, the Jedi Knight who ultimately became Darth Vader. Next month, Christensen will return to play the Sith Lord in Lucasfilm’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+. But it sounds like the studio might have even bigger plans for his future.

Christensen discussed his Star Wars return in a new interview with Total Film (via GamesRadar+). Although his performance as Anakin was one of the main sources of criticism levied at the prequel trilogy, the prevailing view is that George Lucas’ writing and directing was to blame. So it should be interesting to see how Christensen fares now that he gets to present a new side of Anakin’s character.

“When George had brought me onto the prequels, it was to play Anakin,” said Christensen. “He gets knighted as Darth Vader towards the end, and for a couple of scenes, I get to put the suit on. But my journey with the character was with Anakin Skywalker. But the character? He’s such a complex character. And now, getting to explore the mindset and the emotional state of Darth Vader, has been a lot of fun.”

Last fall, word broke that Christensen would also get to return for Disney+’s Star Wars: Ahsoka series opposite Rosario Dawson. Surprisingly, Christensen kept quiet over whether or not he is actually involved with that show. But he did suggest that Obi-Wan isn’t the end of the road.

“The extent of this journey, I think, remains to be seen,” added Christensen. “But what a privilege to get to come back and do this, and to be a part of this project.”

Obi-Wan Kenobi will premiere with two episodes on Disney+ on May 27.
