HBO Max Is Working on a Legion of Super-Heroes Animated Series

The future of the DC universe is about to get animated, again. Via his newsletter, writer Brian Michael Bendis has revealed that HBO Max is developing a Legion of Super-Heroes animated series based on his comic run. Bendis also indicated that it will be an “adult animated show.” In other words, it’s not necessarily for kids.

Legion of Super-Heroes takes place in the far future, as heroic young members of the United Planets come together to protect the galaxy. There was a previous Legion of Super-Heroes cartoon in 2006. They have also appeared as guest stars in other animated series, including Young Justice: Phantoms.

“HBO then asked what else I would want to do and if there’s any DC properties I thought would make an interesting show,” wrote Bendis. “I may have yelled the word LEGION louder than you want to in a normal adult person business meeting. So yeah, the headline today is… HBO Max has put me to work on a LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES TV SHOW. At the moment it is being developed as an adult animated show. Can you tell I am jumping up and down about this? I’ve been working on it for a while and last week I was sent to the next phase.”

However, Bendis warned fans that it may be quite a while before this new series is ready to premiere.

“Facts: its very early goings but I can tell you this will be an adaptation of the Legion of Super-Heroes that Ryan Sook and I have been working on the last few years. And just like that series, on sale now, it will harken back to so many classics while at the same time doing what Legion does: pushing all the ideas of superheroes forward in every direction.”
