Showrunner Jac Schaeffer Discusses WandaVision’s Pacing

With Episode 4 already in the books, WandaVision has passed its midway point. The latest episode showed that nothing was like it appeared, as it broke the sitcom reality’s fourth wall more than once. However, fans are becoming more eager than ever to find out what happens next, with some complaining about the inability to binge-watch the whole series. While talking with ThePlaylist.netWandaVision showrunner Jac Schaeffer explained that the series release schedule was one of their least concerns when they started producing it.

“When we were early, early working on [‘WandaVision’], it wasn’t known what the rollout would be,” she stated. “So, the question was less about the binge-ability or dropping them weekly, it was more about how long can we keep the sitcom gig going? How much to reveal about the larger mystery? How much will be in the MCU space versus how much will be in the authentic sitcom space? That was always a question. And a concern, really. But we were all very unified in seeing how far we can take it. And if we could truly create a sitcom featuring [Wanda and Vision].”

She then added that the current global situation forces everyone to take their time instead of rushing things.

“Even though I know there is a lot of impatience, I think there is a lot of delight to be found in stretching this out because we all have so much time on our hands right now.” And unlike some previous shows, there won’t be any “filler” episodes. “Every episode has something exciting from here on out. It’s a wild ride.”

She also said that audiences should be reading between the lines of those commercials popping on screen from time to time.

“[The commercials] felt like something we had to do that was another added layer of texture and nostalgia that would also be a lot of fun,” she said. “And [they’re] another way to tell different layers of the story.”

The first four episodes of WandaVision are already available on Disney+. The fifth episode will premiere on Feb. 5.
