Netflix Is Developing a Conan the Barbarian TV Series

Two years ago, Amazon Prime was developing Conan the Barbarian as new live-action TV series. However, that project ultimately didn’t go forward and the rights have relapsed. Now, Deadline is reporting that Netflix has signed a deal to pick up the Conan rights from Conan Properties International. And the first thing on the agenda is a live-action Conan the Barbarian TV show, which is now back in development.

According to Deadline, Netflix’s contract also allows the streaming service to make Conan films, as well as live-action or animated Conan stories. Conan was created in 1932 by Robert E. Howard, and he has proven to be a popular character decades after Howard’s demise. Marvel currently publishes Conan comic books, and the Cimmerian warrior has also headlined his own video games.

Arnold Schwarzenegger famously played Conan in two feature films in the early ’80s. However, Jason Momoa portrayed Conan in the 2011 reboot film.

In 1997, Ralf Möller starred in a short-lived Conan the Barbarian TV series that was done in the tone of Xena and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. There were also two Conan animated series during the ’90s, neither of which was particularly faithful to Howard’s work.

Fredrik Malmberg and Mark Wheeler will executive produce the new Conan live-action series for Netflix. But a showrunner and writer is not yet in place. The search is also on for a director to helm the series.
