Danai Gurira Addresses Michonne’s Walking Dead Future
WARNING: There are spoilers ahead for last night’s episode of The Walking Dead!
For over a year, The Walking Dead fans have wondered what would become of Michonne after Danai Gurira announced her departure from the series. As viewers of last night’s episode can attest, Michonne’s story is far from over. Instead of going out in a blaze of zombie-fighting glory, Michonne discovered evidence that her lost love, Rick Grims, is still alive. Additionally, Michonne decided to leave Alexandria behind to continue the search for Rick.
While implication seems clear that Gurira will join Andrew Lincoln in the upcoming Walking Dead feature film, she wasn’t very forthcoming in a post-episode chat with Deadline. But she did share her appreciation for how it played out.
“I thought it was beautiful that she got to, you know, kind of get cosmically rewarded for helping this weird guy, Virgil, who is played by a wonderful actor who I’ve always admired, Kevin Carroll,” said Gurira. “Rewarded by finding evidence that’s something she’s always suspected was true, which was that Rick didn’t die on that bridge. So, you know, we’ll see how that goes. See what happens next or see if something happens.”
Additionally, Gurira thanked Walking Dead fans for supporting her seven year run on the show.
“I couldn’t be more thankful and have more love for the fans of the show,” said Gurira. “Also, I feel there’ll be an indelible connection to this and the audience of The Walking Dead. The love that they show us and the way that I’ve been able to connect with them over the years, which has made me a better human being. It’s filled me with gratitude and love, and I’ll always be deeply appreciative of them for that.”
