Two New Batwoman Featurettes Take a Closer Look at Kate Kane’s Costume

We’ve seen plenty of Batsuits grace the big and small screens over the last several decades. But of course, the goal of Batwoman was to let Kate Kane’s pointy-eared alter-ego stand apart from her better-known cousin. So the show’s costume department wanted to give her a unique appearance. In a pair of new behind-the-scenes clips, cast members Camrus Johnson and Nicole Kang reveal what makes the suit special. Specifically, they take fans inside the design process and explore the costume’s many features.

The first featurette includes a sitdown with costume designer Colleen Atwood, a four-time Oscar winner who has previously worked on films like Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Surprisingly, Atwood shared that she only had “about six to eight weeks” to complete work on Ruby Rose’s Batwoman getup.

“I explored laser printing onto the fabric to give it texture to bring it into this time period, but still pay homage to the comics,” Atwood explained. “For me, this costume was really important because it was actually a Batwoman, which to me was really cool and exciting.”

Atwood’s efforts definitely paid off. But whatever you do, don’t just call it an outfit. In the second featurette, Johnson explains why the suit is the “perfect combo of form and function” (or as his character describes it, “literal perfection”). Thanks to its use of military-grade kevlar enhanced by the Fox family’s proprietary technology, bad guys don’t stand a chance against Gotham City’s newest heroine.
