While CBS All Access is greatly increasing its Star Trek universe, the final frontier may not be limited to the streaming service. Variety is reporting that CBS and Nickelodeon are in negotiations to develop a Star Trek animated series aimed at children.
Although details are scarce, the potential Star Trek cartoon is the creation of writers Kevin and Dan Hageman. Previously, the Hagemans have collaborated on Trollhunters, as well as Hotel Transylvania, The LEGO Movie, and The Lego Ninjago Movie. Nickelodeon.is reportedly looking at it as a potential tent pole series.
Last year, CBS All Access revealed plans to make its own Star Trek animated series. Unlike Nickelodeon’s possible series, Star Trek: Lower Decks is a more comedic take on the franchise. Rick and Morty writer Mike McMahan is shepherding that series. Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek: Discovery) is also developing an additional Star Trek animated series for CBS All Access.
In addition Discovery and two animated series, CBS All Access is planning a Jean-Luc Picard series. Patrick Stewart will reprise his role from Star Trek: The Next Generation, and the series will likely film this year. A Discovery spinoff in the works, which will feature Michelle Yeoh.
