The Russo brothers aren’t concerned that superhero fatigue could hurt the reception of Avengers: Doomsday. Their approach becomes clearer in their latest comments about the film.
In an interview with the Associated Press during the fall movie preview, the directing duo discussed the influence of the Western genre on their filmmaking approach. Anthony Russo said, “Joe and I grew up fans of all types of cinema, but Westerns have always been very special to us. Throughout cinema history, the Western has been declared dead for decades, and then you can still make one of the greatest examples of the genre.”
This thinking helped shape Avengers: Doomsday, as the Russo brothers aim to balance large-scale action with more personal moments. Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West was also a particular inspiration for the upcoming Marvel film.
The latest updates on Avengers: Doomsday
A recent report claimed that Avengers: Doomsday has wrapped its reshoots. The report cited insider Daniel Richtman and also claimed that the additional filming involved Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch and other characters. Marvel has not officially confirmed the reported reshoots or the details surrounding them.
The studio recently launched the Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday Official Podcast ahead of the film. Iman Vellani and Frank Alvarez host the series, which revisits films from Marvel Studios’ Infinity Saga ahead of Doomsday.
Joe and Anthony Russo directed the film, with Stephen McFeely writing the screenplay. Robert Downey Jr. will play Victor von Doom, marking his return to the MCU in a new role. The cast also includes Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie and Florence Pugh.
Marvel has also confirmed appearances from several X-Men characters, including Professor Charles Xavier and Magneto, played by Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, respectively. The movie will bring together heroes and characters from different corners of the Marvel universe.
The film is scheduled to arrive exclusively in theaters on December 18, 2026.
