The new Harry Potter TV show trailer gives fans a fresh look at one familiar creature from the original franchise. Its updated design has already caught the attention of viewers, who are busy comparing it with the version featured in the movies.
The troll appears in the new trailer of HBO’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Unlike the 2001 film version, the creature has a noticeably different look, which gives the series its own visual take on the character.

The trailer also features several important moments from Harry’s first year at Hogwarts. It shows the Sorting Ceremony, the Mirror of Erised and the trio encountering the troll in the dungeon.

The new trailer introduces Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter. Alastair Stout plays Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton is seen as Hermione Granger. Janet McTeer appears as Professor McGonagall, while John Lithgow plays Albus Dumbledore. Paapa Essiedu also appears as Professor Snape in a scene where he criticizes Harry during class.
Other familiar elements appear throughout the trailer, including Harry’s owl Hedwig, wizard chess and the Philosopher’s Stone. Luke Thallon also makes his first appearance as Professor Quirinus Quirrell. He is shown wearing the purple turban associated with the character.
The first season is based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the first book in J.K. Rowling’s series. Francesca Gardiner serves as writer and showrunner, while Mark Mylod directs multiple episodes. The television format allows the production to spend more time with material from the book.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premieres on HBO and HBO Max on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2026. The series will begin with Harry entering the wizarding world and attending Hogwarts. It will then follow the events of the first book across its debut season.
