Kit Harington‘s casting as Gilderoy Lockhart has already sparked debate among Harry Potter fans. While the upcoming HBO series awaits the release of its first season, the makers announced the Game of Thrones star as Hoult’s replacement in Season 2.
According to the latest update, Hoult has left the project due to scheduling conflicts. Following the development, Harington has been vested with the responsibility of playing Lockhart. As soon as the news broke, fans online shared differing opinions. Some of them even wanted the GOT actor to portray Sirius Black instead.

Why Kit Harington as Sirius Black in the Harry Potter show would’ve made sense
Fans rooting for Harington to be cast as Black might have a point, as it would have made perfect sense. The English actor played Jon Snow in Game of Thrones. As the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, Snow had a serious and commanding presence throughout the series. Thus, playing Black could have been more in line with the serious tone of his previous role.
Instead, Lockhart has a much more flamboyant and comedic personality. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the character is initially presented as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Arriving with a huge fan following, Lockhart initially appears to be a hero. However, he is gradually exposed as a fraud who cannot even control the pixies during one of his practical lessons.
The first season of the Harry Potter series is set to premiere on December 25, 2026. However, there’s no release date announced for Season 2 yet.
