A Game of Thrones star is set to step into a major role for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series. The multi-season adaptation will bring J.K. Rowling‘s celebrated book series to life on screen.
Kit Harington, known for playing Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, has joined the cast of the anticipated Harry Potter TV show’s Season 2. He will portray the character of Gilderoy Lockhart. Harington replaces Nicholas Hoult, who was originally set to be a part of the series but eventually left due to scheduling conflicts, according to Deadline.
In the original movie franchise, Lockhart was portrayed by Kenneth Branagh in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. While this marks Harington’s first live-action appearance in the Wizarding World, he previously voiced Lockhart in Audible’s Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions.

Kit Harington has played various other popular roles in his career so far. His notable movies include 2014’s war drama Testament of Youth, where he played the role of Roland Leighton. Directed by James Kent, the critically acclaimed film also featured Alicia Vikander, Taron Egerton, and Emily Watson, among others.
Harington also voiced Eret’s character in 2014’s blockbuster animated movie How to Train Your Dragon 2. In 2021, he also became a part of the MCU with Eternals in the role of Dane Whitman/Black Knight. Harington was also seen in films such as The Beast Within, Pompeii, The Dreadful, and more.

Harington will soon appear in the BBC’s adaptation of A Tale of Two Cities. The four-part historical series will see him playing Sydney Carton, a young lawyer.
The show is set in 1782 London during the war between Britain and France. The ensemble cast also features François Civil, Mirren Mack, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Yannick Renier, Fehinti Balogun, Barry Aird, Roxane Duran, Theo Costa-Marini, and Guillaume Gallienne. A Tale of Two Cities will premiere on September 6, 2026, on MGM+.
