Marvel is bringing the Avengers and the X-Men together for a battle. A showdown between the two celebrated teams of superheroes is something fans were seemingly not expecting.
The Avengers and X-Men are coming together for a unique winter-themed special. The upcoming feature will pit the two teams against each other in a hockey game. The publisher has announced that Marvel Winter Break Special 2026 #1 will be released in December 2026. The feature will be an extra-sized one-shot comic. The issue will tell a complete story. It has also released the cover for the issue by David Nakayama.
Ryan North, Christina Strain, Javier Garrón, and Pete Woods are among the creators behind the special. The comic will have a New Year’s Eve theme, with Marvel heroes dressed in winter-themed outfits.
The preview for the winter special reads, “When the temperature drops, Marvel heroes bring the heat! Following last year’s hit Marvel Winter Break Special #1 and the recent revival of the Marvel Swimsuit Special, MARVEL WINTER BREAK SPECIAL 2026 #1 hits stands in December with another celebratory one-shot packed with frosty fun and winter fashion!” The issue is scheduled for release in December 2026, and fans can pre-order it at their local comic book stores.
The X-Men & Avengers remain two of Marvel’s biggest superhero teams
The Avengers and the X-Men are two of the most celebrated superhero teams across comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Avengers are known for protecting the world from powerful threats, including the supervillain Thanos. The iconic crew includes Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Spider-Man, Scarlet Witch, Black Panther, Falcon, Ant-Man, alongside others.
The X-Men, meanwhile, are a team of mutants who often fight threats while confronting prejudice against mutant foes like Apocalypse. Led by Professor Charles Xavier, other members of the group include Wolverine, Cyclops, Rogue, Mystique, Jean Grey, Magneto, Nightcrawler, Emma Frost, Gambit, and others.
Notably, the end of this year will also see an unforgettable team-up between the two groups in the much-awaited MCU film, Avengers: Doomsday, which releases on December 18, 2026.
