A newly leaked set video from The Last of Us Season 3 hints at an unexpected return of a familiar character after a tragic death. The new footage suggests HBO’s hit series may be revisiting a storyline many assumed was closed for good.
According to a clip shared by @svtjems on X, the footage shows Jesse (played by Young Mazino) and Tommy (Gabriel Luna) splitting up in an alleyway. Jesse’s appearance on the sets of Season 3 comes as a surprise after his fate in the Season 2 finale.
Jesse was shot and killed by Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) during the dramatic theatre confrontation. As Jesse is confirmed to be dead in the present timeline, his appearance in the new footage indicates a flashback, not a resurrection.
Jesse’s history with Tommy could bring more of their Seattle story to Season 3
Tommy and Jesse share a close mentor-student relationship and operational bond in the Jackson, Wyoming community. The two traveled to Seattle while searching for Abby and seeking revenge for Joel’s death. After reuniting with Ellie (Bella Ramsey), the group is ambushed by Abby. After killing Jesse, Abby holds Tommy at gunpoint, confronts Ellie, and fires a shot before the screen cuts to black.
The HBO series could use Season 3 to expand this part of their story through flashbacks. Jesse’s appearance alongside Tommy could show events that happened before the tragic events at the theater in Seattle.
The original Naughty Dog video game also features a similar scene. In the game, Tommy survives a severe gunshot wound despite Jesse’s immediate death.
Season 3 is expected to shift the focus toward Abby given how Season 2 followed much of Ellie’s journey. That change could allow the show to revisit earlier events while exploring parts of Seattle that were not shown in detail.
However, the new footage does not confirm how Jesse will appear in the upcoming season. HBO has yet to reveal whether the character will feature in flashbacks or how much screen time Young Mazino will have.
