Thanks to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Hollywood’s domestic box office has already crossed a major milestone in 2026, putting the industry well ahead of last year’s pace. The latest figures point to a much healthier theatrical market, with moviegoers turning out in strong numbers despite the industry still trailing its pre-pandemic benchmark.
Thanks to Spider-Man, 2026 Box Office Has Passed Huge Threshold Already, up by +20%
According to Rentrack, the domestic total reached $7 billion through August 23, representing a 20% increase over the same period in 2025, when the market stood at $5.86 billion. The figure also represents the strongest post-COVID performance so far. However, 2019 remains ahead at $7.6 billion for the comparable period, while that year eventually finished at $11.4 billion (via Deadline).
One superhero movie has played a huge role in keeping the momentum alive. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has collected $854.9 million domestically and $2.22 billion worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. Its current domestic haul puts it within striking distance of Avengers: Endgame, which sits at $858.3 million. That means the web-slinger is on course to become the second-highest domestic earner ever.
The rest of the year still has plenty of heavy hitters waiting in the wings. The Odyssey has reached $539.1 million domestically, while Toy Story 5 sits at $477.9 million. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has also crossed $429.8 million, and Project Hail Mary has delivered $344.1 million. Meanwhile, Michael, Obsession, and Backrooms have added more fuel to an unusually broad theatrical recovery.
Summer has supplied an extra jolt, reaching $4.4 billion, which puts it 26% above last summer and 6% ahead of 2019 at the same point. The season needs another $311.8 million over its final 15 days to set a new summer record. Looking further ahead, Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday could provide another major boost during the holiday stretch, while Resident Evil and Clayface will test the fall market.
