Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner may be turning into one of the DC Universe’s most dependable wild cards. The actor himself recently noted how Gardner’s expanding presence across Superman, Lanterns and Mister Miracle makes him feel less like a one-off character and more like a recurring thread tying the new DCU together.
Nathan Fillion reflects on Guy Gardner being in Lanterns and Mister Miracle
Nathan Fillion explained during an interview with Extra TV that Gardner already has a clear path through James Gunn’s developing universe. After appearing in Superman, the character will return in the HBO series Lanterns, alongside fellow Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Fillion also revealed that Gardner is heading to Mister Miracle, adding another stop to the character’s growing DCU résumé. “Guy Gardner is becoming a part of the fabric of this universe,” Fillion said.
Fillion also compared Gardner to a “mile marker” — a character whose recurring appearances can help audiences understand where they are within the larger DCU. So, there’s a chance that Gardner might appear whenever the universe needs a familiar face, even when he is not driving the story.
Fillion also praised the approach behind Lanterns, particularly the challenge of getting its “tricky tone” right. He admitted that hearing what the creative team wanted initially left him wondering how they could actually pull it off. After seeing the result, however, he said they “nailed it” and called the project “really good.” He also expressed gratitude for getting opportunities to play Gardner across multiple projects.
“I’m so lucky I get to play these fantastic characters, and then they say, ‘Oh, by the way, we’re gonna throw you in this other show.’ Turns out, it rocks,” Fillion shared.
The first episode of Lanterns will premiere on HBO on August 16, 2026. Fillion is also set to reprise his role as Guy Gardner in the upcoming DCU sequel Man of Tomorrow, set for release in 2027.
