Marvel star Iman Vellani has weighed in on the staggering success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. She argued that its record-breaking run dismantles a persistent industry narrative. Vellani’s comments come as the Sony and Marvel Studios blockbuster races past $700 million at the domestic box office. It joined an elite club of only six other films that have ever reached that milestone.
Iman Vellani says Brand New Day challenges the superhero fatigue theory
Vellani addressed the concept of superhero fatigue, noting the cultural assumption that viewers were ready to reject the genre. The theory gained traction after Avengers: Endgame, with critics pointing to formulaic plots and an oversaturated market as evidence that audiences had grown weary.
“People showed up [to Spider-Man Brand New Day] in the first week. Like nobody really believed in the superhero fatigue, that means. Nobody really believed that this movie was going to fail, and they were over it. They wanted it to succeed,” Iman Vellani said on The Revenge Of Podcast. She then expanded on the root of the issue. “I think we’re so used to being cynical and assuming that like everything new coming out is going to suck and, you know, it’s all propaganda or they’re just trying to, like, whatever. People’s attention spans are low. No, like, we can appreciate a good thing when we see it,” the Ms. Marvel star added.
Her analysis points to a marketplace where quality, not genre, dictates success. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, has already shattered records following its $1 billion global haul. By Tuesday, its domestic running total sat at an estimated $671.2 million, with projections confirming it will cross the $700 million threshold imminently. If it does, it will become the fourth Marvel Cinematic Universe title to achieve that figure stateside, following Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Black Panther.
