John Boyega has shared an unexpected idea for Finn’s future in the Star Wars universe. The actor wants the character to train as a Jedi under Samuel L. Jackson‘s Mace Windu, rather than Rey Skywalker.
Speaking at Rebel Scum Con 2026, Boyega discussed Finn’s unfinished Force-sensitive storyline. He hopes a future project will finally show the former stormtrooper embracing his Jedi potential. Finn first seemed to have Force connections in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He used a lightsaber against Kylo Ren and showed unusual instincts during several dangerous moments.
Later, the idea became clearer in The Rise of Skywalker. Finn tried to tell Rey something important about his connection to the Force. However, the movie ended the conversation before he could explain it.
Boyega previously discussed the storyline during an August 2022 interview. As quoted by The Direct, he said, “JJ [Abrams], I mean JJ really wanted–’ The Force Awakens’ is the movie that JJ directed; he was kind of pinpoint plotting a trajectory. But obviously with the different creative differences in the middle and then getting to the third, it’s kind of like he still wanted to, you know, just force it in there, just squeeze it in there.”
Why John Boyega’s Star Wars idea could actually work
Finn and Mace Windu would create an unusual mentor-student pairing. Mace was a respected Jedi Master, while Finn began his story as a soldier trained by the First Order.
Mace is presumed dead after falling from a window in Revenge of the Sith. However, Jackson has said he believes the character survived, and Boyega has also supported that possibility.
Meanwhile, Lucasfilm has not confirmed Finn’s return or a project involving Mace Windu. Still, the idea could give the character a separate journey instead of placing him only within Rey’s story.
Boyega has remained open to returning as Finn, but no official project has confirmed his comeback yet. Jackson has repeatedly supported Mace’s survival, saying Jedi can survive falls from great heights.
